For E-DAS Ambient and ATX UsersIs AirVision web-based?
AirVision is being architected to operate in two modes- either as a traditional Windows application and "thick" client, and to have some components that can be optionally enabled as a web-based application. Our discussion with dozens of customers indicates serious concerns with having a web-based application, so this will always be presented as an option in addition to the standard, more secure deployment. The initial release will offer the option of a
web-based data editor so that remote users or partners outside of the agency network can contribute to quality assurance activities.
That being said, AirVision's initial release will offer a
pre-built web site for public information to allow real-time display of AQI and concentration data, query of
historical data in report or graphical format, and regional or site-specific displays/reports.
Outside of this web site and the web-based data editors, the step to provide web-based generation of the
internal agency reports is a short step. Providing web forms for the administration tools (configuration, polling control) may not be desirable to our customers.
What will the ugprade process be like? Will my data and configuration be updated?
AirVision includes data and configuration translators for both E-DAS Ambient and ATX for conversion of averaged data (minute to hourly), non-continuous data, and calibration data. The translators for E-DAS extend to alarm progams, digital events, and a host of other items. Some items will have to be set up again to take advantage of AirVision's improved architecture (some report setups, the Task Scheduler, and GSI channels).
Depending on your communication system, you should be able to run the systems in parallel for a period of time until you are comfortable with the AirVision system. Agencies using dial-up modems may need to designate a new/separate bank of modems (or some modems from the existing bank) to the AirVision system, rather than trying to 'share' the modems between two applications.
I may not want to switch right away? What is the plan for E-DAS Ambient and ATX?
We will be supporting E-DAS Ambient for at least five years, so you can choose any time to transition through 2013, perhaps even longer. Although we plan to support ATX through a reasonable transition period, we would encourage ATX users to transition within the first two years.
What kind of PC hardware will I need?
AirVision will require a license for MS-SQL 2005 / 2008. Very small agencies and tribal agencies can utilize the free version of SQL Express, which is limited to 4 GB or roughly 20 million data records. Most other agencies can utilize SQL Workgroups edition (about $700 for 5 users). PC hardware should be based on that needed to support the SQL database. A typical E-DAS user with 2-3 simultaneous network users should be able to suffice with a current workstation (Intel Duo, 2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, 250 to 500 GB hard disk).
How are clients installed and updated? How are clients licenced?
The current design calls for client installations (and updates) to be downloaded from the primary server, once the primary server is set up (from CD installation). Clients are licensed based on
simultaneous user, as opposed to E-DAS clients which were licenced on a "per PC" basis. E-DAS Client licenses are translated 1:1 during the upgrade process, so a 5-machine license translates to a 5-simultaneous user license.
What is the cost of upgrading?
For customers on a currently active agreement, the upgrade to the equivalent system is at no charge (other than the SQL license and possibly new PC hardware). Equivalent Systems are defined as follows:
- E-DAS Ambient upgrades to AirVision Standard
- ATX upgrades to AirVision Professional (Basic + Generic Import Tool + Automatic Validation Data Processor)
- DigiTrend upgrades to AirVision Node (basic edition, automatic sync function available in Site Node available at additional cost).
What other costs could there be?
Basic users might wish to utilize the advanced features of the
Generic Import Tool or
Automatic Data Validation Processor. Both users may wish to consider the future capabilities of
Automatic File Retrieval (for BAM/TEOM) coupled with the Generic Import Tool, or Direct Analyzer Polling.(available in Version 2).
